Model Overview

The Haval Jolion Pro is a global strategic compact SUV built on Great Wall Motor's (GWM) L.E.M.O.N. modular platform under the Haval marque. In its home market of China, it is known as the Haval Chulian (Jolion), whereas the Pro moniker is dedicated exclusively to export markets rather than being retailed domestically. The SUV first debuted in China in January 2021 with a 1.5T turbocharged petrol lineup, priced between RM78,900 and RM112,900. In 2024, GWM rolled out the all-new 2024 Haval Jolion Pro in Australia before expanding into markets like the UK and Saudi Arabia. Across overseas markets, the Jolion Pro is available in two powertrain options—a 1.5L HEV hybrid and a 1.5T petrol engine. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,470 mm long, 1,898 mm wide, and 1,625 mm tall, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase in a practical five-door, five-seater SUV body style. Serving as a crucial export nameplate for Haval, the Jolion Pro targets young buyers and value-oriented global motorists with its sharp styling, rich tech kit, and versatile dual-powertrain offerings.

Design Language

In terms of exterior styling, the Jolion Pro retains Haval's signature design cues, featuring an all-new matrix chrome front grille flanked by redesigned LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and split headlamps for an aggressive road presence. Its side profile is defined by a dynamic waistline running from the front fender to the tail lamps, paired with sculpted wheel arches to create a poised, forward-leaning stance. Round the back, modernised styling cues include an integrated full-width LED light bar that injects a youthful and sporty flair. Inside, the cabin embraces a clean, horizontal dashboard architecture that visually widens the interior space. Soft-touch materials generously line the dashboard and door cards, elevated by brushed metallic garnishes and woodgrain-style accents to deliver a premium ambience that rivals many competitors in its class. Notably, selected overseas-spec Jolion Pro models ditch the domestic petrol model's rotary gear dial in favour of an electronic gear shifter to better cater to global driving preferences.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the bonnet, overseas variants of the Jolion Pro receive market-specific powertrain tunes, offering a choice between a 1.5L HEV hybrid and a 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine, both driving the front wheels (FWD). The hybrid variant combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). The petrol mill pushes out 70 kW (95 hp) and 125 Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces 110 kW and 250 Nm, culminating in a total system output of approximately 140 kW (186 hp) and 375 Nm of torque. Mated to a 2-speed DHT gearbox, it achieves a frugal WLTC combined fuel consumption of just 5.0 L/100 km and completes the 0-100 km/h century sprint in around 9 seconds. The official top speed for the hybrid is rated at 185 km/h (115 mph).

The turbocharged petrol variant packs a 1.5T four-cylinder engine tuned to deliver between 110 kW (150 hp) and 135 kW (184 hp) with peak torque ranging from 220 to 275 Nm, depending on the target market. In the 2025 Saudi Arabian market, for instance, the 1.5T Active+ variant outputs 135 kW (184 hp) paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), returning a WLTC combined fuel economy of 7.1 L/100 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds. The earlier China-spec model was similarly powered by a 1.5T engine delivering 110 kW and 220 Nm via a 7DCT, achieving a tested 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.97 seconds. All variants feature a 55-litre fuel tank and run on RON 92 petrol or higher.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinning the Jolion Pro is a MacPherson strut independent suspension setup at the front across all front-wheel-drive variants. Hybrid models are fitted with a rear multi-link independent suspension, whereas petrol variants come with either a rear torsion beam non-independent setup or a multi-link independent rear suspension, depending on the market. An electronic parking brake (EPB) is standard across the board, complemented by ventilated front disc brakes, solid rear disc brakes, and tyre options in 215/60 R17 or 225/55 R18 sizes. The chassis is tuned with a distinct focus on ride comfort, filtering out minor road imperfections with poise, though the rear can feel slightly firm when tackling harsher speed humps. Thanks to its generous wheelbase and wide track, the SUV delivers commendable high-speed cruising stability, paired with light steering that makes urban commuting and tight parking manoeuvres effortless.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the Jolion Pro is generously equipped, featuring a 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch full digital instrument display alongside a 12.3-inch floating infotainment touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in GPS navigation, and voice control functionality. Audio is piped through a 6- or 8-speaker sound system, with higher-spec trims gaining a wireless smartphone charging pad. Seating amenities vary by variant, featuring a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and front seat heating, with upholstery spanning from durable fabric on entry models to premium synthetic leather or genuine leather on top trims. The Jolion Pro also adopts an electronic gear shifter—a rarity in this segment—freeing up room on the centre console for deep cup holders and practical cubby spaces. Boot capacity stands at around 450 litres, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats providing versatile cargo flexibility to easily meet the demands of family short-distance travel.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Engineered to satisfy stringent global safety benchmarks, most export-market Jolion Pro variants are built around a high-strength safety cell and come standard with 6 airbags. Its active safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite delivers full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability. Key safety kit includes full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC with Stop & Go from 0 to 150 km/h), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection), Lane Change Assist with Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Traffic Sign Recognition, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Standard active safety systems encompass ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill-start Assist Control, and Hill Descent Control. Selected flagship petrol variants further add Driver Drowsiness Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. This extensive active and passive safety package places the Jolion Pro in the upper echelon of the compact SUV segment, offering urban motorists comprehensive peace of mind.

Market Performance and Reception

The Jolion Pro presents a tale of two markets—flourishing remarkably overseas while facing an uphill battle in China. On the domestic front, sales of the Chulian initially gained traction after its 2021 launch, logging cumulative annual sales of roughly 30,000 units in 2021 before tapering off sharply towards late 2021. Monthly figures slumped to around 1,000 units in 2022, leading to its eventual discontinuation in China by 2023. While domestic consumers praised its smart tech and handsome exterior, recurring quality complaints—such as brake squeal, paint bubbling, and dashboard warping—took a toll on buyer confidence.

Abroad, however, the narrative has been strikingly successful. Marketed as the Jolion, the crossover has enjoyed immense popularity across Russia, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan. In July 2024, Jolion deliveries in Russia reached 8,292 units in a single month, marking a remarkable 92.7% year-on-year surge. In 2025, it briefly clinched the title of best-selling new passenger car in the Moscow region. In Australia, the Jolion Pro starts at around AUD 27,990 (climbing to around AUD 40,990 for the hybrid), where its head-turning styling, comprehensive equipment list, and competitive pricing have allowed it to mount a serious challenge against rivals like the Chery Omoda 5. All in all, while the Chulian was short-lived in its home market, the Jolion Pro stands out as one of Haval's crowning export success stories, underscoring the formidable appeal of Chinese compact SUVs across global emerging markets.
